This Game of Thrones Actor Thought Their Character Was Queer
There are a lot of things people would change about the final season of Game of Thrones, but one actor from the series had a specific scene she was surprised by as well.
In an <a href="https://teenvogue.com/story/game-of- thrones-star-maisie-williams-always-thought-arya-stark-was- queer” target=”_blank”>interview with Teen Vogue, Arya Stark actress Maisie Williams revealed that until she shot the final season of Game of Thrones, she was convinced her character was queer.
“The first time that I was surprised by Arya I guess was probably in the final series where she whips off her clothes and sleeps with Gendry,” Williams told the magazine, laughing. “I thought that Arya was queer, you know? So, yeah, that was a surprise.”
The scene took place at the beginning of season 8 when Arya thought it was unlikely she’d survive the upcoming Battle of Winterfell. She didn’t want to die a virgin, so she found Gendry (Joe Dempsie) and had sex with him.
Williams wasn’t the only one surprised by the scene, as many fans were as well. A large number of viewers had the headcanon that Arya was queer since she first appeared as a tomboy uninterested in marriage in the first season. Her having sex with Gendry was one of many disappointments fans went through in the final season.
Even at the time, audiences were not convinced, with <a href="https://pride.com/tv/2019/4/22/game- thrones-fans-are-still-convinced-arya-stark-lesbian” target=”_blank”>several articles being published across the internet questioning the scene.
Perhaps if Arya had been gay, and had slept with a woman instead, the final season would have been better received. Or maybe not.
